Libraries in Pune

A library is collection of information, sources and services: it is organized for use and read by public body, an institution, or a private individual. In the more conventional sense, a library is a collection of books.

Modern libraries are increasingly being redefined as places to get unrestricted access to information in many formats and from many sources. Librarians, who are experts at finding and organizing information and at interpreting information needs. Most recently, librarians are understood as extending beyond the physical walls of a building by including material accessible by electronic means.

British Library, Pune

General Information

British Council Library, Pune has vast collection of books on Economics, Engineering, Information Technology, Law, Management, Medicine and Science and Technology. The library also provides books on arts or culture, English as a language, or literature and fiction, the social sciences and history.

Apart from the finest collection of books, the library has periodicals and newspapers from the UK.

Dhananjayarao Gadgil Library

General Information

Dhananjayarao Gadgil Library of Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics is one the best reference and research libraries in India especially in the field of Social Science and its allied subjects. The library was established in 1905 as a public library under the aegis of Servants of India Society with Late Gopal Krishna Gokhale its founding member. But with the establishment of Gokhake Institute of Politics and Economics, the library increased its limit and started to function mainly for the institute.

The library has important publications on Economics and allied social science subjects. It has catered the needs of scholars, academicians, policy makers and other users working in social science subjects in India and abroad.

Presently the Library is housed in a majestic four-storey building, which has a rare combination of colonial and modern architecture. Besides, some of the Library collections are also housed in a separate building inside the campus of the Institute.
